Lotus Sutra Class Series, June 23 – October 14 2024

Great Plains Zen Center is offering a series of nine 90 minute online classes on one of the most influential of the Mahayana Sutras, the Lotus Sutra.  We hope you can join us in studying this remarkable sutra with its deep meaning, often cited parables and frequently fantastical imagery.   This course is not intended as an academic course in Buddhist scholarship.  Rather, it is intended to give Buddhist practitioners and interested others an opportunity to explore the content of the Lotus Sutra and it’s place in the Buddhist world, historically and today.
The nine classes will take place every other week from June 23 through October 14.  There are two sections. The Sunday morning section (8-9:30 AM) and the Monday evening section (7-8:30 PM) will have identical content, so participants can choose which section works better for them on a given week.
Texts used will be any copy of the Lotus Sutra that you have on hand (based on Kumarajiva’s Chinese text) and Two Buddhas Seated Side by Side:A Guide to the Lotus Sutra by Donald Lopez Jr. and Jacqueline Stone.  The translation by Tsugunari Kubo and Akira Yuyama of the Lotus Sutra is recommended but not required.  The Lopez and Stone text, with chapter by chapter analysis of the sutra, will guide our exploration of this complex and sometimes opaque sutra.
For each class, there will be a screen-shared handout with the key points in case you miss the class or are unable to get the reading done beforehand.   In addition, all will also be encouraged to attend a local Soka Gakkai meeting or Nichiren Shoshu Temple sometime during the class series, as these Buddhist denominations center the Lotus Sutra in their practice.  Participants are also encouraged to undertake a creative project inspired by the Lotus Sutra.
You will receive a class syllabus which gives you the expected reading for each class along with other detailed information when you register.
If you would like to participate, but purchasing either the Two Buddhas book or a copy of the Lotus Sutra itself presents a hardship for you, let us know and we can arrange loaner copies for you.  The cost of the class series itself is $40 for the 9 classes.  Full or partial schloarships are available during the registration process.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
