Buddha’s Birthday Celebration, Sunday April 7 2024 at 7 PM

Join us Sunday evening, April 7 for a celebration of Buddha’s Birthday taking place at Countryside Church, 1025 N. Smith St. in Palatine, IL at 7 PM.

We warmly invite all to attend.  The event is for everyone.  Family members, including children of all ages who would like to participate, whether they are Buddhist practitioners or not, are welcome.  That includes older children/young adults as well.   Our celebration will include a ceremony in which we chant the Heart Sutra as we are bathing the baby Buddha (inside the flower house as shown in the photo above) with sweet tea.

We will also have some family-friendly meditation.  The remainder of the evening will be a social gathering with desserts and snacks.  We would love to see you and meet family and friends who’d like to join in.  Feel free to stay for as little or as long as you’d like, recognizing that some need to get home earlier given they have school or work the next day.

Hana Matsuri, the anniversary of the birth of the Buddha is traditionally celebrated in Japanese Buddhism on April 8.  We have had a variety of celebrations over the years.  This year, we will observe Buddha’s Birthday on April 7 during our regular Sunday evening meeting, with a family-friendly program and a social gathering afterwards.

To make this event a success, we need some advance information on who is coming.  Please…

  • RSVP  (email) to Great Plains Zen Center or call 608-325-6248 to reply by phone.  Let us know  who is coming, including the ages of any children or young adults,  so that we can plan appropriate activities.
  • Send a message to Shozan Lira if you are able to bring a dessert or snack.  IMPORTANT:  Countryside Church requests that no nut products be brought into the room in the church where we typically meet for gatherings, so please plan to bring items that do not contain nuts.
  • If you have questions about the event or are able to come earlier on Sunday evening to help decorate the flower house before the celebration, please email Roshi or call 608-325-6248.
